“Shocking” News: 5 signs of a bad suspension

posted on

Unlike the more functionallysensitive parts of a vehicle such as the engine or the
electrical system, problems with a vehicle’s suspension are often ignored or
missed completely. In this blog post we at Vesas Automotive will give you a few
ways to tell if your suspension is just showing its age, or if there’s something more
sinister at work.

  1.      Bouncing and Rocking
    1. Depending on the type of vehicle, suspension systems are designed to be either loose and smooth (like a luxury car) or tight and rough (like a truck), but that doesn’t mean drivers won’t detect something isn’t quite right. If you feel that your vehicle is not riding as steady as it used to, a suspension inspection at your local auto mechanic shop is a good idea.
  2.       Rolls and Dives
    1. Though more common on heavier, larger vehicles, a sure sign that a
shock or strut is going bad is a “rolling” and/or “diving” sensation when
the driver applies the breaks. Typically with a bad suspension the
vehicle’s front end will dip or lean heavily to the side, even when making
soft turns or slow stops. If dipping or rolling occurs, get your vehicle
inspected immediately: safety is always important!
  3.      Tire Cupping
    1. When the suspension has begun to wear out, a vehicle cannot
distribute its weight evenly while driving, causing uneven tire pressure
and eventually bald patches and uneven tread. If you spot this on your
vehicle, bring it in for a checkup.
  4.      Rearing Acceleration
When a vehicle accelerates on the road, the sudden force is absorbed by the
shocks and struts to keep the vehicle level and even. A bad suspension however
can no longer absorb the force correctly, transferring the power to the rear and
causing the front end of the vehicle to rise up like a rearing horse.
