Diligent Driving: 5 Signs of a Bad Alternator

posted on

Enter the alternator, a simple but crucial part of vehicle operation that turns the
mechanical energy of the crankshaft into electrical power. Without the alternator
running at full capacity, the electrical system of the vehicle is severely
compromised and can cause multiple problems. Vesas Automotive has put
together a quick list of the most common warning signs that your alternator is on
its last legs, so if you discover any of these, take action!

Our Friend, the Dashboard

Sometimes labeled “ALT” or “GEN,” this dashboard warning light is linked to
monitoring systems that keep track of the voltage produced by the alternator.

When this light turns on, it means that the voltage is not keeping up with the
proper output and signals a problem with the alternator.

Secondary System Failure

As the bells and whistles of a car are powered by electricity, when these luxuries
begin to diminish or fail completely it’s time to check the alternator. A dying
alternator might have enough power to run the radio, but turn on the heated seats
and defroster and suddenly the car turns off, signaling a problem

The Battery is Dead

One of the clearest indicators that an alternator may no longer be functioning is
when a vehicle’s battery dies. A car’s battery can pick up the slack of a faulty
alternator…for a short time. Without the alternator there to recharge it, the battery
will soon die and thus send a clear signal that something is wrong.

Low or Dim Headlights

The largest demand placed on a vehicle’s alternator will occur when the driver
switches on the headlights, especially the high beams. If you notice a sudden
drop or spike in illumination, the alternator is most likely not performing well and is
in need of maintenance.

Belts Belts Belts!

An alternator generates power by way of a belt that transfers the motion of the
crankshaft to the alternator, so all it takes is for that belt to be damaged, broken or
stretched and the alternator can no longer function.
